Dear Colleagues,

due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 13th International Congress for Finno-Ugric Studies had to be postponed and replaced with an electronic pre-congress, which took place in August 2020. The abstracts and other materials of the pre-congress presentations are still available at the pre-congress website. Once again, many thanks to all presenters and participants!

However positive our impression of this virtual Finno-Ugristic conference, a virtual meeting can never completely replace real-life discussions and encounters. Therefore, although it is difficult to foresee the situation next year, we – following the example of some other conferences also re-scheduled for next summer – are planning to organize the “real” Congress in Vienna on 8–13 August 2021. More information about the programme, the venue and other practicalities will appear on the congress website and on our FB and VK sites. Registration will begin in March 2021.

If the abstract of your congress presentation has already been accepted and you did NOT give this presentation at the electronic pre-congress in August 2020, your abstract is already included into the congress programme and you do not have to resubmit it. However, for those who already gave their talk at the pre-congress but now have new research results to present, and for those who missed the first call, we now announce an additional call for papers.

Please submit your abstracts to the e-mail address cifu13@univie.ac.at by December 15, 2020. The maximum length of each abstract is 3000 characters (including spaces). Each participant can submit maximally two abstracts (including those already submitted!): one as the lead author (presenting author), one as a co-author. Please note that the submitted abstracts must be in English. However, you can attach a parallel version in another language, if you consider it necessary. The actual presentation at the CIFU can be in any of the languages traditionally used in Finno-Ugric studies, and we warmly welcome the use of minority languages in particular. However, we kindly request all presenters to keep in mind that the CIFU is an international event and the language choices should be as inclusive as possible. (For example, if your talk is not in English, having the visual support of your presentation in English is recommended.)

Due to our multilingual policies, it is important that the title of each presentation in the final programme be in the language in which the actual talk is given; if the title is in English, the audience will expect an English-language presentation. Please give the title of your abstract in the language in which you plan to give your talk!

By default, the abstracts submitted now will be assigned to the general session. If you wish your paper to be included in a symposium, please contact both the organizer of the symposium (for contact information, see the list of symposia) and the congress organizers (cifu13@univie.ac.at). Note that some of the symposia already have a large number of talks and cannot be extended any more.

If you have any questions, please feel free to write to us: cifu13@univie.ac.at. We also recommend that you follow our website and our social media channels. Stay tuned!

Looking forward to seeing you in Vienna,

on behalf of the organizers

Johanna Laakso

President of CIFU XIII
